Intrenchment Creek Community Stewardship Council looking for leaders to serve as committee chairs

Good morning neighbors and greetings once again from the Intrenchment Creek Community Stewardship Council!

My name is Jason Dozier and I am the co-chair of a newly formed organization called the Intrenchment Creek Community Stewardship Council. You might have seen a few email blasts and community engagement campaigns tied to the Post-Development Stormwater Ordinance. While we’re proud to be part of the fight to reduce the impacts of flooding on our communities, our organization’s primary mission is to restore, revitalize, and protect the ecological health of our south Atlanta communities.

Specifically, the Intrenchment Creek Community Stewardship Council is looking to achieve the following goals in support of our south and southeast Atlanta communities.

  • Develop stewards who are strong and empowered leaders working for the restoration, revitalization and protection of Intrenchment Creek; and develop/grow an educated and empowered community that is positively impacting the restoration, revitalization and protection of Intrenchment Creek

  • Advocate for the fair and equitable treatment and inclusion of the underserved Intrenchment Creek communities in the planning and implementation of projects, and the enforcement of environmental policy, regulations and laws.

  • Collaborate with public and private partners to implement projects for the watershed conceptualized with community input such as with the One Water Intrenchment Creek Task Force vision.

  • Serve as an interdisciplinary, scientific and technical collaborative for information sharing on watershed activities in Intrenchment Creek

  • Promote sustainable land use and reduce the impact of food insecurity through the implementation of urban agriculture

To that end, we’ve developed a committee structure to ensure that we are able to accomplish this. Specifically, we are looking for energetic community leaders who would be willing to serve as committee chairs in support of the Intrenchment Creek Community Stewardship Council’s mission and goals.

Below is a list of our standing committees, along with descriptions for each committee.

  • Development, Green Infrastructure, and Equity Committee

    • Identifies, inventories, and reports on development projects happening in the watershed and works with technical leaders to understand ecological and environmental impact affecting the communities across the watershed

    • Identifies opportunities for Green Infrastructure to be used to capture and maintain stormwater runoff

  • Community Engagement and Outreach Committee

    • Develops outreach strategies to inform residents and community organizations of our organization, our initiatives, and how they can be involved in our work

    • Manages and implements strategies that mobilize people to give, advocate and volunteer

    • Manages social media and web presence to achieve those ends

  • Youth Leadership and Engagement Committee

    • Works with Community Engagement and Outreach Chair to increase the engagement and participation of youth across Intrenchment Creek

    • Work to maintain any programming that is or will be created for the benefit of community youth

    • Develops the next generation of environmental justice leaders, potentially through partnerships with schools and other organizations

  • Monitoring and Accountability Committee

    • Works with technical experts to ensure communities, developers, and other stakeholders are adhering to established guidelines for community benefits, stormwater retention, and other agreed to terms

    • Works with community members to record and report air, soil, and water quality in the Intrenchment Creek area

  • Awareness, Training, and Education Committee

    • Develops programming to educate residents and stakeholders about the Intrenchment Creek Watershed

    • Creates and leads events that increase the awareness of our watershed, its topography and health, and the issues that impact the sustainability of the watershed

    • Works with partners to develop and create education and training opportunities for community members

  • Urban Agriculture Committee

    • Works with communities to develop opportunities for healthy, locally-grown food

    • Partners with relevant organizations to increase locally-sourced food access across the Intrenchment Creek watershed
