2018 Soil Festival SoilSHOP

Food Well Alliance invites you to join us for our fourth annual Soil Festival on May 5, 2018, as we continue a tradition of celebrating soil as a key source for building gardens and healthier communities.

This free event is for all ages and raises awareness of the benefits of using compost to improve and maintain high quality soil and to grow healthy food.

Soil Festival 2018 will be held at Truly Living Well’s Collegetown Farm in Atlanta, and includes a host of exciting opportunities for school gardeners, community gardeners, backyard gardeners, urban farmers, educators, beginning gardeners and children!

This is a great opportunity for folks to get their soil tested for lead, learn about composting and gardening, and enjoy local food, among many other things. Information about the lead soil testing is attached, and you can get more information about the event and register here:

Hi-Tech Race Series 2018

It is my pleasure to introduce you to the Hi-Tech Race Series: 5K and Consumer Tech Innovation Festival taking place in your Atlanta City Council district on July 14th, 2018. This is an annual event that brings together techies of all types – who enjoy family, friends, fitness and fun – to experience the epicenter of Atlanta’s downtown landscape starting and ending at the newly renovated Georgia State Stadium.

The Run/Walk spans a 3.1 mile (5K) route that takes participants on a scenic trek around Atlanta’s downtown landscape, starting at the Olympic Rings, and ending at Georgia State Stadium. The post-race Consumer Tech Innovation Festival is held on Legacy Plaza, the privately held stadium entrance and will feature:

  • exciting product demonstrations from major consumer electronics brands
  • highlights and networking with innovative local tech companies
  • meet-and-greets with college recruiters
  • previews of university science & technology programs
  • presenters from tech-focused organizations
  • product intros from “celebrity” techies in the field
  • consumer product giveaways, and more!

The “Hack for Health” Challenge Hackathon is the third component of the event which takes place at Georgia State University’s College of Education and Human Development on race day. We’re gathering 100 hackers (including local high school students; college hackers, and tech company coaches) to participate in an exploration of UX design in fitness tech. The purpose of the hack is to target talent and grant them early, meaningful access to tech industry processes and professionals in order to inspire interest in pursuing careers and entrepreneurship in the field.

The thrust of the event is to celebrate the technology advances behind the gadgets we love, but also to highlight the need for tech industry change. We recognize that the tech ecosystem needs to be far more diverse, and we’re firm believers that a more diverse industry will lead to a better and more representative future for us all. Currently, despite the purchasing power of underrepresented groups, the tech workforce is comprised of less than 5% African American and Latinx talent, and less that 24% women. Our event gives major tech brands, local startups, and career seekers access to support the cause of diversification, and to explore opportunities for ideation and conversation – all while having FUN.

The helpful links below offer more details about the 5K, tech fest and hackathon that all comprise the July 14th festivities.

You are invited to attend and rally in support of this event and to bring your families and friends to join us. We want to ensure that the neighborhoods impacted by our event feel welcomed and valued, and plan to partner with local organizations and individuals to decrease any barriers (perceived or actual) to participation.

Thank you and please feel free to contact me with any questions.

I would like to invite and notify you of the Hotlanta Half Marathon being held on Sunday, June 10, 2018 at 7:00AM at Pemberton Place – World of Coca-Cola. Last year our annual race brought 1,500 runners to the City with 35 states and 4 countries represented. Our course is designed to highlight the best and unique areas of Atlanta, giving resident and visiting runners a tour of our City. This year we expect over 1,800 runners with 30% visiting Atlanta for the event.

We also have partnered with 9 charities that serve the Atlanta community and will share in a portion of the proceeds. These charities include: Side By Side Brain Injury Clubhouse, Team Blueline, Gateway Center, Pass Them Like You Love Them, Refuge Rescue, Miles for Cystic Fibrosis, Pajama Program, The Agapao Movement, and Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation Atlanta Chapter.

We have been and will continue to work closely with APD and a professional medical team to ensure safety of all runners and to minimize the impact of any traffic. Attached is course map, course directions, and timeline of effected streets. Baker St. NW between Centennial Olympic Park Dr and Luckie St will be completely closed 2:00AM-2:00PM, all other rolling lane closures can be found on the timeline. If any changes between now and race day occur, I will be sure to notify you.

Request for Proposals from Local Artists for Pittsburgh Art

Where the Heart Is: An Artistic Examination of Home is a community-led public art initiative that provides a platform for Pittsburgh residents to reclaim their shared spaces and the narratives that accompany them. Areas of residential value and civic interaction, such as barber shops, convenience stores, recreation centers, basketball courts, churches, and even abandoned lots are publicly unsung as viable community assets and/or colloquial sacred spaces. Where the Heart Is allows Pittsburgh stakeholders the opportunity to affirm and commemorate the landmarks, symbols, and stories that reflect their collective identity via public art. Through an extensive community engagement process, WonderRoot and the project artist(s) will work collaboratively with residents to identify landmarks of local value, capture individual narratives, and conceptualize artistic markers that articulate the collective vision of the neighborhood. Where the Heart Is encourages the Pittsburgh community to reexamine their eminence as valued residents as they continuously shape their shared environment.

WonderRoot is currently accepting proposals for the Lead Artist for the Where the Heart Is project. Interested applicants can download the request for proposals here and submit proposals here.
